We’ve decided that John Scott – born in Edmonton, by the way – should get on a horse, throw on a white cowboy hat, and lead our Calgary Stampede parade!
He was the captain of the Pacific Division that won the tourney – a team that included our Calgary Flames Johnny Gaudreau and Mark Giordano.
If you don’t know the back story: Fans voted John Scott into this past weekend’s All Star Game.
The NHL didn’t like that a “non All Star” was going to be playing with likes of Patrick Kane, PK Subban, Jonathan Quick and Johnny Gaudreau so they made moves and John Scott was traded from the Arizona Coyotes to the Montreal Canadiens – who sent him to the AHL affiliate St. John’s Ice Caps.
But hockey fans lost their minds and the NHL said even though he wasn’t on an NHL team he could still play.
John Scott says he even got a call from someone in the NHL who tried to persuade him one last time NOT to play.
“So when someone from the NHL calls me and says, ‘Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of? That’s when they lost me. Because, while I may not deserve to be an NHL All-Star, I know I deserve to be the judge of what my kids will — and won’t — be proud of me for.’ ”
