One of the most iconic scenes of a rock band on TV took place back in 1967 on the Smother Brothers Comedy Hour.
The entire scene was built up with some American vs. British wit…and an incredible Rock Show that had it all with flare, explosions, rampage and even life long injuries.
Yep, British Mod Rockers The Who were on American late night TV and they did not disappoint.
– A battle of wits took place between (I believe) Tommy Smother and The Who…some classic burns (put-downs) were laid down against each other.
– The Who came out firing with “My Generation”
– Drummer Keith Moon filled his drum kit with explosive’s which triggered a bomb like explosion, shooting shrapnel into the drummer arm and causing guitarist Pete Townshend to lose some permanent hearing
– The band also destroyed the set by doing what they do best…trashing their instruments
To this day it remains some of the best TV ever and guess what?!?! For the first time since that incident, The Who will be back on late night TV in America as they guest on “The Tonight Show w/ Jimmy Fallon” tomorrow! (Friday, March 4th)
