It was shocking news for many of us on Tuesday, May 24th when Canada was waking up to news that the Tragically Hip Frontman Gord Downie has incurable brain cancer. Now Downie, his family and the band all knew of this back in December and since then the man who has written some of the most ‘Canadian‘ songs ever has gone through chemo before the news broke out to the public.
For Gord right now he is doing okay and will be okay short term. No one knows how long he has but that’s not for us to think about and really to enjoy the ‘now.’ The Tragically Hip are doing just that by releasing their latest album “Man Machine Poem” on June 17th and then will tour the record with 10 Canadian dates starting in Victoria on July 22nd and finishing in their home city of Kingston in August. Calgary’s date is set for August 1st and tickets will be available Friday, June 3rd at 10am.
A very good idea was brought up by a radio station in Barrie, Ontario to get Gord Downie an Order of Canada…one of Canada’s most prestiges awards for being, well AN OUTSTANDING CANADIAN!
The petition reads:
From his songwriting to environmental activism, Gord Downie embodies what it means to be Canadian. Along with all The Tragically Hip band members, he’s had a profound impact not just on the world of music, but on Canadian culture as well.
Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
