The Tragically Hip documentary Long Time Running debuted in theatres this week.
The film, which chronicles Gord Downie’s brain cancer diagnosis and the band’s cross-country tour last summer, shows some of the frontman’s tough times – like not being able to remember his song lyrics.
But the movie also some great moments of levity and humour.
“Thankfully, the film doesn’t succumb to morbidity and barely any time is spent on Downie’s medical condition, though it hangs over the proceedings like a circling storm,” Chris Jancelewicz writes in his movie review.
In Long Time Running, we learn that Gord Downie loves the Bee Gees.
“It would be like, the Bee Gees, who are my secret. Ya know – it’s not a band that you’re supposed to (like) – but god, I love them,” Downie says.
Kingston, Ont., band Kris + Dee wrote a beautiful song called Summer Made a Rally about the Hip’s final farewell show last summer.
Paul Langlois’s wife Joanne wrote about the song on her Facebook page.
“Our friends, Kris Abbott and Dee McNeil (Kris and Dee) have written and recorded this beautiful tribute to that day last year, when our country stood still, to honour one man and one band,” she wrote about The Tragically Hip playing its final show on the Machine Machine Poem tour last summer.
If Gord Downie is happy to admit that he loves the Bee Gees, you can tell us your SMO (Secret Music Obsession).
