Unbeknownst to her classmates and teachers, Jacey Uphill wrote her final exams of Grade 11 in June last year struggling for each breath and in unbearable pain. When she spiked a fever the next day, her mother took her to the Alberta Children’s Hospital to get checked out.

Angela and Malcolm were thrilled with their new baby twin girls Veronica and Lydia, but within a few months, Lydia became very lethargic and her head was unusually large. They brought her in to the Emergency Department at the Children’s where she was given a CT scan. Everything after that went into high speed. Within 2 hours, they were meeting with a nurse practitioner and an oncologist and learning their 7-month-old baby had a brain tumour the size of a mandarin orange. A couple of hours later, neurosurgeon Dr. Hamilton came straight from the OR still in his scrubs. He ordered an MRI right away – which determined that Lydia’s tumour was vascular - it had blood vessels. There was a good chance that Lydia could bleed out on the table so fresh blood product would absolutely be needed.

Last summer, Neil and Jolene were devastated when their little boy had been involved in a very serious accident with a riding mower. Knowing that he was in life-threatening condition as he was flown to the Alberta Children’s Hospital by STARS, the family made their way from Stettler, AB - receiving regular cell phone updates from the medical team at the hospital as to his condition. When the arrived that the hospital, they were immediately met by a social worker who took them to meet the trauma doctor and surgeon, Dr. Carmen Brauer. The news was heartbreaking.
