The majority of Gleniffer Lake will reopen this Canada Day long weekend for recreational use, following successful clean-up efforts from that oil pipeline leak into the lake and the Red Deer River earlier this month. Alberta Environment says ongoing monitoring indicates the area is within human health and environmental standards and once again is safe to use, with the majority of hydrocarbons contained and removed. However, the far southwest corner near Dickson Point will remain closed. Water quality monitoring will continue through the weekend and following weeks to ensure hydrocarbon levels remain low. Shoreline clean-up will continue up the Red Deer River to the release point until provincial environmental standards are met.
