Unbeknownst to her classmates and teachers, Jacey Uphill wrote her final exams of Grade 11 in June last year struggling for each breath and in unbearable pain. When she spiked a fever the next day, her mother took her to the Alberta Children’s Hospital to get checked out.
X-rays revealed “something” in her lungs…initially thought to be fluid. Unfortunately, further scans revealed that this “something” was fixed (it didn’t move when she was in different positions) and that she was dealing with a very large mass that was taking up two thirds of her right lung. Jacey and her mom were immediately introduced to her oncologist, Dr. Victor Lewis…and what was thought to be a quick trip to emergency for some antibiotics turned into a 6-week hospital ...

Little Roan's story

Please help the Alberta Childrens's Hospital by becoming a Miracle Makers & giving an $18 gift every month!Call 403-802-2700 or Donate Online!
Last summer, Neil and Jolene were devastated when their little boy had been involved in a very serious accident with a riding mower. Knowing that he was in life-threatening condition as he was flown to the Alberta Children’s Hospital by STARS, the family made their way from Stettler, AB - receiving regular cell phone updates from the medical team at the hospital as to his condition. When the arrived that the hospital, they were immediately met by a social worker who took them to meet the trauma doctor and surgeon, Dr. Carmen Brauer. The news was heartbreaking. Their son’s leg had been severed below the knee and due to the severity of the wound, there was no opportunity to reattach it. The family was very grateful for ...

Double Cute - Lydia & her twin sister Veronica!

Angela and Malcolm were thrilled with their new baby twin girls Veronica and Lydia, but within a few months, Lydia became very lethargic and her head was unusually large. They brought her in to the Emergency Department at the Children’s where she was given a CT scan. Everything after that went into high speed. Within 2 hours, they were meeting with a nurse practitioner and an oncologist and learning their 7-month-old baby had a brain tumour the size of a mandarin orange. A couple of hours later, neurosurgeon Dr. Hamilton came straight from the OR still in his scrubs. He ordered an MRI right away – which determined that Lydia’s tumour was vascular - it had blood vessels. There was a good chance that Lydia could bleed out on the table so fresh blood product would absolutely be needed.
The surgery went ahead the next morning, but unfortunately, the ...

Let's meet Shyana & her mom Jacqueline!

Jackie & John have 5 beautiful kids. They adopted their two girls who had been removed from a violent and abusive home. The couple knew that they would have to make adjustments and may have challenges with the girls but they had no idea what kind of difficulties would lie ahead. Their youngest daughter, 12-year-old Shyana suffers from attachment based disorders and well as other mental health issues that began showing up from a very early age.
Shyana’s behaviour escalated for 8 years and the family struggled to get answers, to cope and to get the help they so desperately needed. However, as is often the case with mental health, there is a stigma that goes along with mental health disorders. People in the community, friends and even family were blaming Shyana and her parents for her behaviour—not realizing that mental health is a real sickness. Things in their house ...

Who will this equipment help? Six years ago, when Zak was only 10 years old, he and his family were at the family’s cabin in Vulcan, AB. Zak had been feeling fluey all day. He was taking a cool bath when Wendy noticed he looked bluish. She immediately drove him the hospital in Vulcan, and by the time they arrived, Zak couldn’t even move his legs. Things began to snowball from there and he began to crash. The staff in Vulcan knew that whatever was happening to Zak was well beyond their scope. They called STARS to come and get him to the Alberta Chidren's Hospital but because it was a terrible blizzard that night, they couldn’t fly. Instead, the Transport Team from ACH (Emergency doc, respiratory tech, ICU nurse) jumped into ...

It's an Equipment POWER HOUR - Call now 403-802-2700

Please help the Alberta Childrens's Hospital by becoming a Miracle Makers & giving an $18 gift every month!Call 403-802-2700 or Donate Online!

At just 3 months old, Elizabeth suffered her first seizure in front of her mom Teresa. Luckily, Teresa is a Neurology nurse in the adult health system and knew exactly what she was seeing. She called 911 and the paramedics transported her to the Alberta Chidren's Hospital. Within a year, Teresa had a diagnosis - a Mitochondrial Disorder, complex 1, 3 and 5. Basically every cell has a powerhouse to fuel it, but in Victoria’s case none of her cell powerhouses work. She suffers from developmental delays and from many different kinds of seizures. Yet, ask mom Teresa and she still considers herself to be extremely lucky. Elizabeth is doing great. She eats on her own, where most of the others are on feeding tubes. She is ...

Let's meet Rhys!

Please help the Alberta Childrens's Hospital by becoming a Miracle Makers & giving an $18 gift every month!Call 403-802-2700 or Donate Online!

Rhys was only 2 ½ years old when his mum felt a lump on his side and took him to the doctor. The doctor ordered an ultrasound for the next day, at the Alberta Children’s, Hospital, where two doctors examined little Rhys. Kari was shocked when they ordered a CT scan but the real shock set in when they also said “cancer”. After the CT scan, Kari and her family met with an oncologist. She says that she didn’t fully understand the seriousness of the situation until she first stepped into the oncology unit and saw all the bald kids—and then she was terrified. Dr. Anderson explained that Rhys had a WILMS tumour – a tumour the size of a large softball on his kidney. It had ...

On Air -The Lund family

Please help the Alberta Childrens's Hospital by becoming a Miracle Makers & giving an $18 gift every month!Call 403-802-2700 or Donate Online!

Last summer, little Brynn complained to her mom about a small lump on the bottom of her foot. Known as the family hypochondriac, her parents didn’t give it much thought. At a doctors appointment for one of her other children a few days later, Mom Christy mentioned it to the physician and he suggested that he should take a look.
After a series of tests, Christy received a phone call no parent wants to get. Results confirmed that their daughter had cancer…rhabdomyosarcoma, to be exact.
The cancer had spread to Brynn’s lymph nodes in her groin, which meant she was facing a Stage 4 diagnosis…and very aggressive treatment. Intense chemotherapy and a seven week stint of radiation have taken their toll on her little body…but not her ...
